Ponderosa Pine – San Juan – Large Tube

Out of stock

Grown from seeds harvested in San Juan National Forest. Pinus ponderosa is a large coniferous pine (evergreen) tree native to Colorado. The bark helps to distinguish it from other species. Mature to over-mature individuals have yellow to orange-red bark in broad to very broad plates with black crevices. Younger trees have blackish brown bark, referred to as “blackjacks” by early loggers. Ponderosa pine’s five races can be identified by their characteristic bright green needles. The Rocky Mountains race has short (3.6–5.7 in), stout needles growing in scopulate (bushy, tuft-like) fascicles of two to three. Ponderosa grow at elevations of 5,000 to 9,000 feet and can reach heights of 100 to 120 feet and 3 to 4 feet in diameter. Note: The nursery identifies its crop of Ponderosa growing in tubes according to the National Forest in which the seed was collected. While trees in all three are similar, some customers may wish to select the source best matching in terms of altitude, rainfall, and other growing conditions, the intended planting site.
