Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a warm season native,  deep-rooted perennial rhizomatous grass, its clumps growing to 4-5 feet in height. Hardy to Zone 4b and to 7,500 ft. elevation, it forms showy, airy flowers of pink, red or silver in midsummer. Tolerates soil extremes. Good cut flower and yellow fall color. Switchgrass was once a dominant species of the central North American tallgrass prairie. It is used primarily for soil conservation, forage production, game cover, or as an ornamental grass. Recently it has been used as a biomass crop for ethanol and butanol production. Grows best in full sun. Requires regular irrigation in Colorado’s semiarid climate.
